The manufacturer of one of the laser shifters states quote, "Laser detectors are ineffective for two reasons: First, the laser beam from the speed gun is very narrow, about three feet in diameter at the normal targeting range. This makes it near impossible for your detector to detect the laser beam when it is aimed at another car. Second, the laser gun acquires and displays your speed in 1/3 of a second. Even if your warned of it's presence, there is insufficient time to react to avoid the speeding ticket. This is the mayor difference between radar and laser. Microwave beams from radar guns are wide spread, covering the entire road making it easy to detect and therefore making radar detectors useful."
